How Long Does Striping Paint Take To Dry?

The question every business owner asks on striping day: "when can cars park on it?" Here's the honest answer for Western Washington conditions.

The Short Answer

Commercial traffic paint is typically dry to the touch in 30-45 minutes and ready for vehicle traffic in 1-2 hours under decent conditions. We recommend keeping freshly striped areas clear for a couple of hours for full adhesion — after that, drive on it.

What Changes The Timeline

• Temperature. Paint cures fastest between 60-90°F. Cool Northwest mornings stretch dry times; warm afternoons shrink them.
• Humidity & rain. Water-based traffic paint needs dry air to release moisture. We watch the radar and won't stripe into incoming rain — wet paint plus rain equals striping twice.
• Surface. Fresh sealcoat, aged asphalt and concrete each absorb paint differently.
• Paint film thickness. Heavier-build lines (which last longer) take somewhat longer to cure than thin bargain coats.

How We Keep Your Lot Open Anyway

Dry time rarely means a closed lot. We stripe in phases — one row or zone at a time, coned off while it cures — so customers keep parking through the whole job. On busy retail sites, we work at night or early morning: by open, lines are cured and cones are gone.

One Warning

If a contractor tells you cars can park on the lines "immediately," they're either using very thin paint or leaving you to discover tire tracking across your new lines. Proper cure time is part of a professional job.
